These drawings were created from live models, often with only seconds or a few minutes to capture a pose.
The time constraint changes everything. There’s no opportunity to endlessly correct a line or slowly construct the figure. You have to observe, make a decision, and commit.
Most of these are charcoal, with a few in ink and conte crayon. The subtractive drawing took several hours and uses a different approach, building the figure by removing material.
Life drawing taught me something that has carried directly into my professional work: You can’t create something interesting if you’re afraid of making the wrong mark.
